The fact that kids are gambling online is not a surprise, unfortunately. However, you may be shocked to find out that your kids could be gambling and you may not even know about it.
Indeed, before online casinos appeared, it was impossible to gamble if you are under 18. Whereas now, to register and play online you only have to put one tick infront of a box to confirm you are at least 18. This is right, one click of a mouse and your child can be gambling.
The biggest problem is the fact that there is not much done to prevent this. Kids are logging on in huge numbers, and no one seems to be caring about it. Indeed, when someone talks about problem gambling the first and in most cases the only thing they mention is the fact that men lose their houses, families to gambling, but almost nowhere you can hear about kids.
Since it has been introduced, online gambling has fastly become a multibillion-dollar business. There are over 2000 sites offering different gambling games from keno to blackjack. According to recent studies, adolescents make a number 3 times higher than adults.
One of the Canadian provinces, Nova Scotia is now taking steps to eliminate the risk of teens gambling. What they did is they introduced a freeware program that allows to block gambling sites on their PC. The software is called Betstopper and now it is only available for residents of Nova Scotia.
The study conducted in Nova Scotia found out that teens were gambling three times more often then adults. This indeed indicated the problem and has shown it was the time to create something to make them not so exposed.
600 copies of the software were already distributed and even after the pilot version has been introduced it has brought results, as 78% Nova Scotia parents were motivated to talk to their kids about the risks of gambling online.
